Undertaker Update Adds to WrestleMania Chaos

Now that WrestleMania is so close, WWE has officially entered high rumor season. But perhaps no name has been the source of more gossip than The Undertaker.

Wrestlevotes, a Twitter handle with a source inside WWE, claims that Undertaker vs. Cena is still on for WrestleMania. Even more, the build-up for that program will be SmackDown exclusive.

The Wrestling Observer also says that WWE wants to have the pair of icons meet at WrestleMania, despite reports claiming Cena is destined to battle Rey Mysterio in New Orleans.

For full context, let’s backtrack to Monday Night RAW, where Cena masterfully teased a WrestleMania match with the Undertaker. Just as we all wet our pants with glee, Cena pulled the rug out from under us and decreed a match with The Deadman was “impossible.”

The Undertaker return took another blow when SI.com claimed the 52-year old has been “ruled out” for ‘Mania. This is where all of the Mysterio chatter entered the fray, and as of two days ago, it appeared that he and Cena were a lock for April 8th.

However, reports from PWInsider disputed SI’s claims and said that Mysterio’s return to WWE is likely, but not to the degree of certainty SI purported. In their article, SI asserted that Mysterio was backstage at this week's SmackDown to finalize his new WWE deal. But apparently, that was not the case.

But, Mysterio is rumored to be close to a new deal with WWE. However, because Mysterio is not interested in a full-time return, negotiations have stalled. While he certainly could sign in time for a WrestleMania match with Cena, it’s more likely that he’s being used as a smokescreen for The Undertaker.

SI.com never stated why Taker was disqualified for ‘Mania, which leaves room for plenty of skepticism. In recent weeks, multiple videos surfaced depicting The Phenom in the middle of some stringent workouts, indicating he is at least healthy. If he has indeed been “ruled out” it would have to be for something other than an injury.

Rumors of Cena vs. Undertaker have percolated for months now, and things appeared to be certain just last week. Mysterio's addition to the story has always felt incongruent, and it’s beginning to look like any reports tying him to Cena at WrestleMania have become the dreaded, Fake News.

Superstars of the past and present converged, there was plenty of looking back and reminiscing, including some special moments for 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin and The Undertaker.

But the beauty of professional wrestling is that the world always keeps turning, and things keep moving forward, and there was also a massive title change and some hellacious action with the current squad before WWE Royal Rumble 2018.

After he was beaten at WrestleMania 33 in the main event by Roman Reigns, it looked for all the world that The Undertaker had finally retired.

His body has been breaking down in recent years, and despite some definite highlights, perhaps the final true peak was his last successful defence of his Streak, against CM Punk at WrestleMania 29.

When his return was confirmed for Raw 25, many thought he may yet have one more match in him. There's been plenty of talk about John Cena at WrestleMania 34. But last night seemed to put the nail in the coffin of such talk "The carnage began on this sacred ground of evil 25 years ago. I've taken legends and ripped them off their pedestals and thrown them in the cold dark earth.

"Stone Cold answered to the Reaper, Mick Foley answered to the Reaper, even my own flesh and blood Kane had to answer to the Reaper.

"They all tried, they all failed. And now on this sacred ground, I declare for all of those who have fallen, it is truly time you Rest In Peace."

And for in-ring action for the Deadman, despite over 70% of you wanting One More Match, that surely is that.

Calaway began his wrestling career with World Class Championship Wrestling (WCCW) in 1984. After wrestling for World Championship Wrestling (WCW) as "Mean Mark" Callous from 1989 to 1990, he signed with the then World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE) in 1990, making him the company's longest tenured in-ring performer. Calaway is considered to be one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time.^[10]

As The Undertaker, Calaway's gimmick was a horror-themed, macabre entity who employed scare tactics and held links to the supernatural. The character was reinvented as a biker during a period in the early 2000s before returning to his previous gimmick in 2004. The Undertaker was the storyline older half-brother of fellow WWE wrestler Kane, with whom he has alternately feuded and teamed with as The Brothers of Destruction. The Undertaker has been involved in various pivotal storylines and matches within WWE history.^[5]

The Undertaker was also known for The Streak, an unprecedented run of 21 straight victories at WWE's leading pay-per-view event, WrestleMania (including main event matches at WrestleMania 13, WrestleMania XXIV, WrestleMania XXVI and WrestleMania 33), before he sustained his first loss at WrestleMania XXX to Brock Lesnar.^[11] Prior to his WWF/WWE career, he also held the USWA Unified World Heavyweight Championship once and since unseating Hulk Hogan as WWF Champion in 1991, he has won the WWF/WWE Championship four times and the WWE's World Heavyweight Championshipthree times. He also won the 2007 Royal Rumble.

The Undertaker has main evented 69 pay-per-view events, more than anyone in WWE history.
